Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. The youngest daughter of Abraham and Marcella Quintanilla, Selena grew up in a humble home along with her brother A.B. and his sister Suzette. Nurtured by his father’s love for music and guided by the experiences he had in the industry, the Quintanilla brothers formed a small band built upon their father’s musical foundation. At the age of nine, Selena was well established as the lead singer of the band known as Selena y Los Dinos.
In 1983, Selena and her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Along with Los Dinos, Selena toured in the State performing at weddings and small clubs. In the following years they added members to the band winning numerous local and regional awards for albums released through independent labels in Texas. This success attracted the attention of EMI Latin executives and at the age of 18 years Selena signed a contract with major label. The Tejano singer quickly reached the top of a male-dominated industry becoming one of the biggest names in the genre.
A few years later, Selena launched Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) and won a Grammy® for Selena Live (1993). In 1994 the recording of Amor Prohibido, her last album in Spanish was completed. The success of this album, which surprisingly included five singles on the top ten on Billboard’s Latin 50, pushed her record label to work on a crossover album that would bring Selena to the American market. Unfortunately, the opportunity to experience the massive success was cut short with her sudden death.
Although the chances of stardom of Selena in the world suffered a blow with her premature death, the posthumous release Dreaming of You (1995) gave a clear indication that Selena was, in effect, on her way to becoming a star of the Anglo market.
Before her death on March 31st, 1995 in Corpus Christi, Selena was able to position herself as the NUMBER ONE Latin female star in United States and Mexico. The interpreter of “Como la Flor” became the first artist to place five singles in Spanish in the list of the best selling Billboard 200. Amor Prohibido was nominated for a Grammy ® and made it to Platinum. In a short time Selena and her music had reached far more people than anyone ever had imagined. Since the launch of her multi-platinumDreaming of You, Selena sold more than 21 million albums worldwide.
The story of Selena’s stardom was captured on the film Selena (1997), starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos. The film showed both, personal and professional struggles she faced along the way, as well as the difficulties encountered of a Mexican-American family in United States when trying to strike a balance between two cultures.
Between 1993 and 2002, Selena maintained the number one position of concert record attendance, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo annual. At the end of the last millennium, Billboard magazine named Selena as the “Latin Artist of the Decade” and in 2002 she was nominated for a Latin Billboard Award in the category “Female Pop Album of the Year” for the album Live, the Last Concert (2001).
